Ok, here is another question and I will keep this one simple enough for everybody.

Question: What is the "rule of thumb" for determining the depth of a pole hole in soil? How deep of a hole would you need for a 50' pole?

OK.....
Fair enough....add 2 to the first number on the pole height....
EG: 35' would set 5'6" 3+2=5 and the 5 would be the additional 6"

brewsky dats my rule of thumb.......lol

Pole height plus 10%. A 40 foot would be 44"

We also use 10% plus 2" so a 50" pole hole would be 7" deep.

I've heard the following say what

5' deep @ 30' and 2' extra for every additional 10'

Example:

50' pole- 5' (for30') +2 (30'-40') +2 (40'-50')= 9' total depth

Not for sure if that's right answer but That's the information I've followed. biggrin.gif

TLW-------------
WHAT KIND OF SOIL ARE WE TALKING HERE?? GOOD--POOR---OR ROCK?

A GENERAL RULE OF THUMB IS 5 FT FOR A 30FTR AND THEN ADD 6 INCHES FOR EVERY ADDITIONAL 5 FT OF POLE!! EX: 30 FT POLE = 5 FT

SO A 50 FTR WOULD BE 7 FT IN GOOD SOIL
7 1/2 FT FOR POOR SOIL
6 FT FOR ROCK (AND I'VE SEEN THE TIME WHERE THAT WAS CLOSE TO IMPOSSIBLE!!)

The rule of thumb that I have always been taught is this:
10% of the length of your pole, + 2 more feet. So, 10% of a 50' pole is 5'. You add
an additional 2' more to that and you end up with 7'. So, a 50' pole should be set at 7' in good soil. Thanks everyone! yes way

Well, 458, you lucky line dawg you! You and Bartsub just won an all expense-paid
trip, paid by me, for as many guests as you like, to take a virtual tour of this historic establishment: Lineman458's and Bartsub's Grand Prize Tour of Spoetzle Brewery! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
Serously, thanks for the answers. I know there are a lot of different formulas/specs
out there, but this is the one I was taught and it is a "general" rule of thumb. I guess the true answer would be whatever your company specifies at the time. yes way

Yes, 458, if you like the taste of a good, dark, German-Bohemian style beer. But I like that they keep the brewery small and don't contract out their recipe. Thanks for answering the posts. Got any pole buddies? Drag their butts in here. I'm trying to get my new groundman in here to register......YA HEAR ME OMAR??!! The dude can organize a truck like you wouldn't believe! brewsky
