The January issue of the IBEW Electrical Worker magazine has an article about the clarification of OSHA PPE rules . According to the new clarification posted on Nov. 15 , 2006 employers must now provide work gloves , fall protection and pole climbing gear . The OSHA rule will go into effect on Febuary 15 , 2008 and employers will have six months to be in compliance. You can find the article and the OSHA web link at www.ibew.org

THE COMPANY ALREADY PROVIDES ALL PPE AND WORK GLOVES FOR US...NOW GETTING THE KUNTZ LEATHER WORK GLOVES, AND THE SALISBURY KEVLAR GLOVES....KINDA LIKE MECHANIC'S WORK GLOVES.......RAIN GEAR AND AFTER YOU BUY YOUR FIRST SET OF HOOKS,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,CAN BUY PAYROLL DEDUCTION, FOR APPRENTICES........THEY WILL REPLACE ANYTHING THAT BREAKS, WEARS OUT.....INCLUDING HAND TOOLS!!

We get provided the Kuntz over protectors and rubber gloves and the fall arrest harnesses for our buckets but our employer does not provide climbing equipment. That is strictly out of the apprentices or linemans own pockets. My company even changed another policy last year when some climbing equipment got stolen while working in Atlanta. They do not care if its on the company truck or not, if our own personal gear gets stolen during or after work ours, then the company will not pay for it. No if, ands, or butts.

OSHA makes it quite clear in the new PPE rule that climbing equipment is considered PPE and as such the company must pay for it. They also state that if an employee damages or loses PPE that the company can make the employee pay for it.

I guess that says it.Us cable guys have to buy our own PPE,except for the bucket fall arrest harness.Everything else we buy.Our class 2 hot gloves are out of date by years but that's all we got

You don't have to buy your own. Unless you are a sub. I supply my guys with everything, if they don't like it they can buy there own. Most cable guys that come around have their own climbing gear and prefer to use thier own, and thats fine with me. Hard hats, gloves, orange vests or coats, and all hand tools I provide.
It only makes sense that if you want production you make sure they have the equipment to produce a quality product, and safely (I might add).

We supply all our own stuff.I have to squander someone elses overdated hot gloves just to get a pair for our crew safety.Safety glasses>>>huh?Gloves>>>>Don't use them myself but you won't find anyone passing any out.Sounds like you have a good gig going on there,bro!It's so bad here that a month ago our transmission park brake in our T-40 didn't work,so instead of fixing it they disabled it because of a part procurement problem.Now we rely on an electrical micro-lock brake for our primary static braking system.The list goes on in our industry around these parts

My company covers EVERYTHING, tools, PPE, materials. If I buy anything out of pocket, I can submit receipts and get reimbursed.

I know some other companies dont treat their workers as well as we get treated.

I feel lucky cuz like Strange's co. Mine provides everything you need from glasses and gloves to climbing gear and hand tools. I was having trouble getting my hot gloves to stay on because the cuff was tight on my forearm so they bought me bell cuff gloves and they work much better. The way I see it if a company requires you to use certain PPE then they should have to provide it. I think that between OSHA and Fed labor laws one of them should have already made it mandatory already.
