JEA's high electricity rates could threaten jobs
After years of failed negotiations with JEA over rising electricity rates, the head of the First Coast Manufacturers Association said several thousand local jobs are in jeopardy as manufacturers consider relocating to more affordable markets.
JEA electric rates were lower than the national average about seven years ago, giving Jacksonville a competitive advantage in attracting new manufacturers, said Cornerstone Regional Development Partnership Executive Director Jerry Mallot. The utility’s electric rates, which are average or slightly higher than the national level, almost pushed Saft America Inc., a high-tech battery manufacturer, to choose a North Carolina site with access to affordable hydropower over Jacksonville.
JEA Chief Financial Officer Paul McElroy responded that rates for industrial and commercial users can’t be lowered without placing unfair price hikes on residential users.
