I hope it does well for you.
I think safety is a priority and shouldn't be over shadowed by revenue stimulation.
Today in my business safety is always a concern ... after the fact!

That's what it boils down to.
The individual is left responsible.
If I can't do the work without jeopardizing my safety then the work won't get done.
I just went through this with the CCA gaffs.
Bell Canada says what we have are adequate.
In my opinion the reason new CCA gaffs were invented was to meet the needs for climbing the CCA poles.
Bell won't buy them and if I buy them and use them on the job they won't want to pay compensation if I get hurt because they didn't approve them.
So I'm left with making do with what I have and getting compensation if I don't get killed or buying what I require to do the work safely and take a chance that I won't have an accident ... like working without insurance.

Carla.. Welcome to the site.

That page wont open for me.. is it up and running ?

Kevin..

How are the gaffs different from "regular" gaffs for use in CCA treated poles ?

My new set of spurs are Bachellin (sp), with the offset twist. Very comfortable, but I dont think anything special was done to the gaffs themselves for CCA ? (is it easy to tell the difference ?)

Generally..

Its just sooo easy to take a short-cut, with respect to safety.

"Im only going to climb into this manhole for 10 seconds to take a look which way the cable runs thru"

"No point climbing down just to get the right tool.. Ill use this other tool as a prying device.."

"This small cable would be so fast to fix.. if I called in for some trench shoring it would take so long to set up and Id end up further behind in my trouble cue."

There's a million examples we could come up with.

Permanent and Replaceable CCA Gaff Pole Climbers

C.C.A. GaffThe utility pole widely accepted and used today is salt treated. Through the years, linemen have had difficulty climbing salt treated poles because conventional gaffs did not work efficiently.

Buckingham Manufacturing in conjunction with Koppers, has developed a new gaff to make gaff penetration easier. The method in which the gaff penetrates is through expansion and relief, much like a serrated knife. The C.C.A. gaff is available in permanent and replaceable styles.

I can't say if they're any better as I can't find anyone who has them.
I contacted Buckingham and they tell me many large companies are buying them.
I will have a set within the next couple of months.

I hate to sound so negative all the time but ... biggrin.gif

It's been my experience in dealing with Buckingham that their attitude is take it or leave it.
I told them I was interested in the CCA's for Bell Canada and they never bothered returning my call. biggrin.gif
I really needed their help demonstrating their gaffs and acquiring any test results.

I tried talking to their sales person at a national convention and his mind was somewhere other than his display booth.

Big business, they forget where they came from.
