I realize it's been a month since you asked this question. Where I work premise techs work from the NID in so you won't have to climb. To move up to Facility Tech, Service Tech or Digital Tech you will need to pass pole climbing school which is a week of pole climbing and the instructors can be A--holes. Once you get out in the field you may not need to climb all that often or even very rarely. Your supervisor is supposed to test you every year but it's been 3 or so years since I've been tested.

Actually, here in Oklahoma, our prem techs do climb poles. They are required to work from the faceplate of the terminal to the house.

I got offered the job as a prem tech in Okla but was wondering how often do they climb the utility poles? I'm physically fit & not scared of heights but not interested in climbing 28ft utility poles at all. How often do prem techs have to climb poles? Does AT&T use utility trucks? Any info would be appreciated.

I stand corrected. Here in the SE prem techs are not a union position AFAIK. So there may be alot of variance across the regions.
I would agree with Who Cares and say that if you aren't the kind of person that can tolerate climbing have some respect for the people you would be working with and don't take the job. There are alot of jobs to be had so look for something that suits you better.
