The union representing NB Power employees is warning that the utility’s latest round of job cuts could lead to more power outages in the province.
NB Power is preparing to eliminate 166 jobs at the corporation. These cuts come after the utility eliminated 120 head office jobs two years ago and 26 in the last two weeks.
Ross Galbraith, the business manager of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 37, which represents 2,200 unionized employees, said the cuts could mean more power outages.
"I think New Brunswickers have had a great deal of reliability. What we don't want to be ending up as is something like ... Nova Scotia, where they have a lot of power outages,” Galbraith said.
“We want to retain reliability. So that's a concern and as we move forward, that's something we're going to be keeping an eye on."
