TORONTO – About 600 employees who provide telephone and television service and installation for residential and commercial customers of Rogers across Ontario, are set to strike June 15th, at 8am.
Their union, the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada, has been at the bargaining table with two of the four contractors for more than a year, trying to obtain a first collective agreement. The contractors are Intek Communications Inc., Wirecomm Systems Inc., SC360 Markham Inc. and Dependable Home Tech Scarborough.
“We will negotiate right up until the strike deadline and make every attempt to reach a settlement,” says CEP’s Ontario Region Vice-President, Kim Ginter, “but we have a strong strike mandate from a group of workers who are fed up with enduring financial challenges and unreliable employment continuity.”
One of the key issues is that the companies -- contractors of Rogers Communications – pay their employees on a piece-work system.
“This creates a very unstable financial situation for the workers and they are not able to plan for their families,” says Ginter. “CEP believes they deserve to be paid fairly and treated with respect in the workplace.”
Other unresolved issues are employer clawback systems, seniority, layoff and recall procedures and work assignment.

either they have good talkers in local union, or there is seriously something wrong with their conditions and compensations..

funny how the tree gets a little shake and all the apples are afraid that are going to fall......

We tried to start a union once and it caused such a stir. We did not get the union but they did give us some of the things that caused the whole thing to begain with.....

dunno how things are but some contractors here think theyre above the union itself and its kinda **cked up. One reason why i left my previous employer and started my own business was that I dont want to deal with the issues which are already told how they should be. In the eyes of plenty witnesses, if you guys ever hear that ive not paid what shoulda be paid to my future employess, you can shoot me, cause then ive lost one of the key principles ive followed whole my life: being honest. I really hope these guys can negotiate good contract with the employees and get what they deserve by working hard.
