YellowKnife Lineman gave me a great idea from a post that Lashdawg started (HERE) and it thought I would give it a try.

If you have a Tip, Trick, and Technique that has to do with what you do every day show us. This is your chance to show off or give that tip that no has thought of.

Let me make it clear "This is not a who can and who can't" or a "I'm better that you" topic. If it is not positive it will be deleted you can take it up in PM

Lets have fun
olo131

When Yellowknife made the comment about cutting the pins of a pin connector using his "Klein High Leverage side cutters" I thoight I would show how I measure my pin connectors and shrink when I splice.

Using the first joint in my index finger lined up to the threads and cutting the pin at the tip of my finger makes it perfect, to prove it I have it on a cut line of a tap.

My shrink is cut with my fist, and a thumb out. If you where to measure it twice it will be perfect for a straight splice.

I do the first bend in my index finger too OLO..

Also, for service guys, but we hang drops too. I don't have a picture, and I'm not going to the truck to get cable and show it either lol..

I prefer the 2-2-4 for drops. To speed up the process, hold out your thumb, take the messenger and wrap it around your thumb twice. Pull out your thumb and you have a loop. Wrap the messenger around itself twice at the base of the loop. Next, wrap the messenger 4 times around the messenger and cable. Go on up to the tap, put the loop on the Q-span and give it a tug. Bam! 2-2-4 complete!

I gotta see this, the wrapping around your thumb if can get pics that would be awesome. At Mediacom they want 3-3-5. I don't think it matters.

I'm with you msimmons I think that would be worthy of a picture. Now our guys have no idea what the 2-2-4 or the 3-3-5 is we use POS drop clamps.

I'll post a picture monday for those that have never see one.

Comcast around us uses those clamps but I don't know how to wrap them either.

Alright, here we go. Steps 1 through 5.

1. Peel back messenger on RG-11 (we don't use 6 now do we?) :smilie_daumenpos[1]:
2. Wrap twice around thumb
3. Remove from thumb
4. Wrap twice around messenger
5. Wrap 4 times around messenger and cable

After that, go up to tap, place loop on q span and give cable a tug. The loop will sinch around the q-span and your drop is hung at tap. Add RG-11 fitting, connect to tap and torque wrench with 9/16 torque wrench. Add drop tags and shimmy back down.

We came up with that from fighting on ladders when I was in service. There would be other crap around the q-span and the messenger on RG-11 in 20 degree weather is pretty stiff. Trying to wrap that on metal while freezing sucked.. It was just one technique that sped up the process lol.

Makes things go faster.. Pass that along to your service guys, and they'll feel like they've gotten an hour of their day back.

the only drop our service guys know how to run is to lay the orange one on the ground. they don't touch and black ones in the air. I don't remember the last time i seen a black drop in the dumpster at the shop.
