I think any work after dark or in inclement weather should have two people

We only have two people if the area is not safe or we have poles go down or something.

Thats the same with us service techs are primary on call and maintenance tech on call as a back up but if we have poles go down we usually do the buddy system especially if we are working around downed power always check the voltage with your voltage sniffer it can save your life and i also use the the Fluke 333 Clamp meter I check the ground on the pole before I go up when doin storm work especially at night casue you dont know if there is a neutral saging and back feeding voltage on the strand always wear your hot gloves too during storm work

Day in and day out you run into potential dangers, i think its never a good idea to have less than 2 people working. On the power side you normally have a foreman, journeyman, apprentice and 1 groundman. But there has been days ive worked by myself, like installing temp meters. Which is an easy job, but theres always a chance of things happening you dont forsee. Companies normally try to cut corners to improve there profit / budgeting marks, but when an accident happens it ends up causing the company to spend way over there budget. So in the long run, it benifits not only the employee, but the employer as well to have multiple people on one crew.

  • Yea just a month or so ago we had a pole break and fall into the road.electric wasnt on it ony us and twc and century link.We were on the bottom and waiting for the other guys to transfer so we could do the same. The new pole that had been set a few months before was set about 4 feet away from the existing one.Sio when the old one broke the existing strand wouldnt reach the other pole. The electric dept called me and told me what happened so i rolled out and on the way i called my other maint tech since he was on call but i figured i would roll out and we could get everything fixed safely considering this is at about 10pm.You know my supervisor told me the next day that we didnt need two people to put strand and cable back up.nevermind we already had to attach the chain hoist to the strand then hook it to the choker on the pole that was 4ft away.

I still have a copy of the trouble ticket I was given last year, in one of New York's least desirable neghbourhoods...quote:

" Do NOT dispatch after 5pm. Between the hours of 8am and 5pm dispatch two men with armed guards".

Not kidding.

I can't publicly post the scan since it could get me fired, but will be more than happy to email it to an Admin or a Mod if a proof is required.

wow that's amazing lol. We will take your word for it, no proof needed lol.

Had a similar situation in Cleveland a few years back when i was on a high line crew. We actually had a crew member get beat with a ball bat pretty bad. He gave them his wallet like they demanded, then they still beat the hell out of him. None of us were close enough to get to him in time. He spent 3 weeks in the hospital, most of which was ICU. After that, we had a police officer with every crew, every hour we were on the job for about a year after that.

Let's just say that I don't miss working in that borough anymore and leave it as that...

One of our guys over there was pulled out of his van while taking a lunchtime nap last year, robbed and stabbed...fortunately, he survived, but the incident got most of us pretty worried...

When the times are tough - and they're getting tougher every day - people become desperate...

One of the reasons we still don't have a contract was Verizon's request to eliminate two-men areas and matching job descriptions...there's a lot more than that, of course, but not really related to this topic, so I'll stay away from ranting...Posted Image

There are several areas of cities in every country of the world where you would be crazy to go without at least two men and possibly armed guards or police---a sad state of humanity.Posted Image
