I'm a field engineer, by title, but I mostly work Install and Repair at the customer premises. I'm technically still just a field tech. I work for a CLEC... yeah, i know... I don't get to do any pole work, as we don't have the opportunity for that as of yet. I'd love to do so, but we'll see.

I also randomly work EI in the CO, equipment installation/maintenance, T1/T3 installation in CO and Prem, basic fiber termination/testing, and probably more things than I can remember. Interesting work for sure, but it's mostly customer site troubles at this point for DSL and Voice

Currently I'm a "Plant Technician" for CenturyTel since Nov 2006. Apparently "Combination Technician" isn't a broad enough term for the job. I cover a couple of exchanges with one other guy, it's a large area geographically. We don't clean the toilets, we don't work on the switch, and we don't place cable....we just do everything else. Its about 80% direct buried in our primary exchange...the other exchange, the bastard child, is 95% buried. I fix a lot of cable cuts and do a lot of digups(and that doesn't mean I point at the spot and tell the contract digger to do it. It means I have a shovel and a digging bar in the truck). Most of these cuts are courteously of natural gas exploration....pipeliners and their subcontractors placing culverts and doing road improvements. I primarily do installation and repair, and rehab work when its not busy. Ever worked on CM-8? Yeah I hate it too.

Previously I was a Service Technician for about 7 years with Pacific Bell, then SBC, then AT&T. You'd think that there wouldn't be all that much difference between two telco's but nothing could be further from the truth. If you are fortunate enough to work for AT&T I'd advise you to keep your ass where it is.

Gooday!

I'm currently serving in the Canadian Forces as a Lineman. I'm posted in Edmonton with a regional work center called Canadian Forces Joint Signals Regiment. Majority of our work is away at different bases in Western Canada. We do mostly outside cable plant installing copper and fiber.

I'm releasing at the end of January 2008 and hopeing to continue in the Telecomm industry. Cheers!

How do enjoy being out of the military? I'm personally get pretty excited. The way the Alberta economy is, I feel like a kid in a candy store trying to decide what to do after. I sent out a bunch of resumes last weekend and have already have 1 job offer, and 2 company's expressing interest.

No word back from TELUS yet...

^^^^ I enjoy being a long haired greaseball!!!! People ask me if I miss the Military, and the best answer I can give is....Sometimes, Do I miss the things I used to do, sure, do I miss the guys, definatly, some of the best arsch[1].gif holes I have ever worked with!! But do I miss the BS and politics..... not for a minute!!!

Where did you apply to TELUS? Just for Edmonton or have you put in for more then one position? Might help if you apply for ANY position they offer, and be willing to relocate. There is a aerial construction crew out of Calgary, and one in Vermilion that might be looking for bodies.

I know they had a freeze on hiring late last year (07) but with the new budget year, you might not have to wait to long, Never hurts to keep buggin them, some managers only keep your resume on file for a couple months.

Cool beans... Partied up there with you Canucks for two weeks while on a joint US/Canadian exercise back in the day...

I was the only guy in the NCO club rooting for the American team in the Cup playoffs...

Partied downtown too... Great hospitality up there.. We partied on base then they gave me a lift downtown, drank some Blues together and not sure exactly how.... But I made back to base for launches the next day...

Best food I ever ate while in the military was @ Cold Lake... Worst TDY pay I ever received was @ Cold Lake..LOL..

I was a reservist posted to the line section in CFB Cold lake for 18 months. I've been there for two of those joint exercises (Ex Maple Flag) plus I've been there often for the past 4 years because of the last unit I was with.

Honestly, I gag everytime I think of that town.

My story started off in 1991 at a little vo-tech in Pennsylvania. I had 3 years of training while in high school (cwctc, google it. Yes they do teach it in high school) I graduated in 1994 and started with a little company that's long been belly up. We did lots of lashing, wreck-outs, c-wire and pole transfers. I saw the writing on the wall when our checks were coming late. I then joined the USAF and became a Wire Dawg (telephone Maint). I did that until '99 having been to Lackland, Sheppard, Andrews and Kunsan. Upon separation from the military, I went back to linework until I found a job with a Lucent business partner, doing key and pbx systems. While working in Detroit, I decided that I would move there to give them a hand in our Detroit office. The buggers shut that office down four days before I moved. So, I went to work for one of our contractors in the area until Detroit came to a grinding halt during that whole Mercedes/Chrysler fiasco. I went back to Pa and worked for the electrical company that was doing the Pitt convocation center ( Peterson Events Center ). Then, like an idiot, I went back to the D. Worked for some scheister with a small company for a while. (one of those rip-off artists) I then got an offer to go back to CWCTC as an instructor. I worked there for about 2 years until I realized that that wasn't for me. I then found myself back in Texas for the first time since the military. So I went to work for Time Warner in San Antonio until I got my foot in the door with GVTC. I found a home there. As I&R techs, we do Telephone, DSL, CATV, cable broadband, FTTH and a little maintenance. It's a challenging place that treats you well. Well, that's my story. 13 years in this biz and still going. Thanks
