I think in this case the workers will be the winners if they play their cards right. This competition is what is needed to generate more work and cause the tel-cos and cable companies to get things in order and not try getting by with substandard equipment.
In the end the worker and customer wins.

All that being said Ladderman. One question. Are you and your family happy? In the end that is the only reason I go to work. I enjoy what I do and the guys I work with are second to none. That is the only reason I have been doing this for 30 years. At the end of the week I can afford beer and bait and most people respect what we do .
Now take a deep breath go hug your wife ,crack a beer and bait the hook , its the weekend. friday[1].gif ernaehrung004[1].gif

Oh yes! You know some of us talked one day about when we started, wondering what we would think about doing this type of work. We agreed it is just addictive for some reason. Wife for the most part likes it, but realizes by now what we go through, not having a set schedule for anything, especially at home. Not much fun time during weeknights, but we make up for that on the weekends! Kids are still very young, so I can still get away with the hours I work, but down the road I will probably want to change things around. You know Norscaner, I wish more technicians I talk to on a daily basis could say what you and I do say. You have to enjoy what you do. smilie_daumenpos[1].gif

Hey guys lets get this thread back on topic or IT WILL BE CLOSED.

Pay/ Benefits that one tech gets isnt really any one elses business, unless it is two tech doing the same job for the same company and they are comparing notes.

Let's leave off comparing notes as well. Some employers frown on employees comparing notes for several reasons.

Just my 2 cents, at Bell we're doing TV over phonelines now. Running 24 megs outta D-Slam cabs straight to the prem. Not to mention the cable guys brag about their 6 meg service, thanks to the good old governments anti-trust laws we can't fire back at their lies on the radio and TV about their junk being superior. Our speed is constant as opposed to their drops per customers on the line.

we offer 20 mbs residential service here on CATV and it's not the limit ;)

Ok, let's see you keep it constant. If you really want to get technical, our t1's run at 48 meg but we're not allowed to advertise over 6meg. Not to mention our circuits are dedicated, anybody can run alot over one conductor. These good old power guys can attest to that and voltage drop across that one conductor as well.

T1, 48meg? I've never seen a T1 break 1.544Mbs.

Don't forget, everyone has to aggregate the connections at some point. CATV is just doing it closer to the home based on their network design. No one paying under $150/mo for their internet connection is getting a "guaranteed, dedicated speed" connection directly to the internet.

Maybe not where you are brother, at Bell, excuse me, at&t we guarantee it. Our provided software shows the speed at which it's running. And as far as a t1 only doing 1.5, that's downstream speed, the important side to a business is upstream. And the 22 lines they can carry over it. If you really want speed they can't touch just go to a DS3, we work on those regularly in HOMES around here!!!

I dont think many would disagree that IP based communications (or some variant thereof) is the way things are going.

The cable co offers IP to the network at your local ring.. neighborhood, subdivision, etc. Then they haul the rings back to their main hub and off to the local offerings and the general internet itself.

The telco offers IP right back into the main hub, then similarily off to local offerings and general internet.

Unless theres an app that can take advantage of having a local-loop ring like cableco, (I dunno, neighborhood entertainment channel ? gated community cameras ?) then there isnt much technical advantage of cableco approach.

Telco takes the "hacker" level of security back to the isp equipment.. where cableco local ring is ... ? (cant say Ive heard of hackers on a cablco compromising their neighbours...does it happen ??)

Service up-time.. cableco has the one (local) wire that, when in fault, takes down 50+ subs. But then, telco has a cable with many wee wires, any of which can go into fault, taking down that one sub. ( backhoe "Fade" would take em all out in both cases of course)

I think "who's gonna win" is probably on a case-by-case basis.. affected by image, advertising, price point, quality of service/repair/installation times, vertical service offerings, and depth of pockets.

And Im bettin' on telco.

Last I heard T1's were 1.544 Mbps both up and down, anything else is another technology such as, ADSL, VDSL, or HDSL. 48 Mbps sounds a lot like a VDSL connection while a DS3 is around 43 Mbps. I'd be curious to see what kind of equipment you guys are implementing.

On the DS3's it's straight off a fiber, the customer basically has a mini-slc in their house.

Here in Ontario, Im going to say the cable company is going to win , the Cable company is always ahead of Bell here, Bells max speed for dsl they offer here is 5mbit and you have to be damn close to the CO or a remote to get that, the cable company is offering 10mbit, I also see the cable company placing all new cable in the area, they are going to offer 18mbit soon, I work for bell and I dont see them doing nothing here in the Niagara region, seems like bell isnt investing in new plant or technology down here at all. I dont understand Bell Canada, they make record profits but they dont invest back into the plant. There are still parts of the city were opi`s feed 1000`s of homes on copper on dslams, and the max speed these people can get is about 1.2mbit, Bell should be placing fiber to these opi`s and putting up stingers....NOTHING is being done, and there are no plans for nothing to be done down here..so im going to say Cable here in southern ontario anyhow.

They won't compete.
They are taking everything they can out of the company to get as much profit as possible then they'll sell the entire works, probably this year or next.
Bell is outsourcing everything they can overseas to India.
It can't last much longer at this rate.
Stocks are bound to go up at least once more then I suspect the end will come.
Four more years, four more years , four more years.... then I don't care what they do.
We've been digging this grave far too long and too deep to crawl out now.
It's leaving here
