A Canadian company and a unit of the U.S.

Energy Department are negotiating a loan that would complete funding for a major, proposed power line between cities in Alberta and Montana.

The 230-kilovolt line planned by Tonbridge Power Inc. of Toronto would transport some of the power generated in Montana's emerging wind-energy industry.

A nonbinding agreement between Tonbridge and the Energy Department's Western Area Power Administration sets the stage for detailed negotiations about financing the project with up to $161 million in loans, drawn from the federal economic stimulus program.
