Medford residents clamor for cable competition
FiOS is fast, according to Verizon, but it hasn't managed to reach residents in Medford, who remain bound to Comcast for Internet and cable services while the majority of surrounding communities have the advantage of competition between multiple providers.
“We're getting inundated, slaughtered is the right word, with letters asking us about why we can't have FiOS,” said Ctiy Councillor Robert Penta. “We're at the point where it's like we're the only ones [without it,]”
Some residents have pointed a finger at Mayor Michael McGlynn, who awarded Comcast a 10-year contract in 2005 but has since failed to reach a deal with Verizon, despite numerous meetings. On Wednesday, McGlynn said the two parties were on the verge of an agreement but it fell through when the economy faltered.
